I started using Xubuntu on an old PC (P2/400) circa ’95 that was collecting dust in a corner of my room… I’d heard lots of good stuff about Ubuntu but didn’t want to play with my main computer.
Xubuntu is supposed to have OK performance on lower end PCs. I’m very surprised at how evolved this computing environment is. What comes “out-of-the box” so to speak and what can be installed without any real knowledge of Linux. I can run a p2 400 with 256meg of memory at acceptable speeds. Browser, email, play mp3 files ( this was a bit more complicated as I had to get and install the appropriate codec – had a brain cramp trying to remember those Unix/Linux commands ), burn cds and an office suite (Open Office 2.x)…
Exploring this environment should give me hours of fun…
Might be a business there somewhere resurrecting old hardware for use as a functional home PC….Probably the green movement will be all over me though as these old PCs aren’t so great when it comes to the environment.
