Software, Programming, Gadgets, Whatever…

What a pain in the… IE6 and it’s implementation of CSS just plain sucks! In most cases you can work around it. However, I was showing off my blog at work today, bragging about WordPress 2.7, the theme, plugins  etc. – not even thinking that we have not upgraded Internet Explorer beyound version 6.  (All sorts of reason I don’t want to get into). The point is my blog didn’t look so hot.

As a developer I should have at least checked it out.  I have software that I check my sites with.  IETester

I checked with the author of the Fusion (by digitalnature.ro) theme and it specifically stated that time permitting it could support IE6 (if enough users requested it) so… my bad

No slight on the theme’s author as it is still an exceptional job.  One of the best themes out there!

Update:  Version 1.3 of the Fusion theme now supports IE 5.5 and IE6…

I’ve been building websites  for some time now and I’ve tried to encourage my customers to manage their own content. The problem is, CMS (Content Management Systems) while in my opinion are quite simple to use, they are in fact intimidating for the average customer.  They would rather have you manage their content.  Even though they know their product best. In most cases they don’t understand that even the simplest changes to their content requires time and effort and therefore should incur a cost.

Those folks at Google are constantly building and upgrading software for the masses. Always growing and improving. I'm sure I contribute to their wealth somehow – but I'm at a loss how :)

One such application is Picasa – most recently upgraded to version 3.  This is a desktop and web based personal photo organizer. With it you can manage all of your digital pictures all (so far) for free. continue reading…

Is it just me or are other IT professionals guilty of not practicing what they preach… I was browsing away, using portable Firefox (which I previously praised as being better than PKZip: the software equivalent of sliced bread), listening to tunes using the foxytunes extension and XMPlay all was good in the world…When finished I shut down as normal, using that annoying “Safely remove hardware” icon. The next time I went to surf… My Firefox profile was corrupt. Many strange files in my music directory and a bunch of compressed files that could no longer be accessed… I had to reformat the drive! continue reading…

WOW – I can’t believe this was built within a single HTML page!  — http://www.tiddlywiki.com/

I’ve seen quite a bit of technology in my 25+ years of IT. This is so simple and yet brilliant.

A Blog is a method of capturing one’s thoughts and sharing them on the web for all to see and comment upon. There are many packages out there to help accomplish this feat…The one I’m using is open source

A Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web page content using any Web browser. Collaboration at its best.

The internet has made it simple to share your thoughts around the world in just a single post. If that’s not enough Open Source Content management solutions are available to support a broader range of requirements. (Joomla is what I use)

TiddlyWiki is just plain cool. continue reading…

I started using Xubuntu on an old PC (P2/400) circa ’95 that was collecting dust in a corner of my room… I’d heard lots of good stuff about Ubuntu but didn’t want to play with my main computer.

Xubuntu is supposed to have OK performance on lower end PCs. I’m very surprised at how evolved this computing environment is. What comes “out-of-the box” so to speak and what can be installed without any real knowledge of Linux. I can run a p2 400 with 256meg of memory at acceptable speeds. Browser, email, play mp3 files ( this was a bit more complicated as I had to get and install the appropriate codec – had a brain cramp trying to remember those Unix/Linux commands ), burn cds and an office suite (Open Office 2.x)…

Exploring this environment should give me hours of fun…

Might be a business there somewhere resurrecting old hardware for use as a functional home PC….Probably the green movement will be all over me though as these old PCs aren’t so great when it comes to the environment.
